※What is she?——She is my sister．

※What’s your teacher like?——She is tall and pretty．

※He showed me that he had written．

※Where is this place?

【说明】：

1．比较下面两句话：

What is she?——She is a teacher．她是干什么的?——她是个教师。

Who is she?湿——She is my sister，Mary．

她是谁?——她是我的妹妹玛丽。

第一句是问某人的身份、职业等，第二句是问某人的姓名或关系。

不可说：※What is she?——She is my sister．

〖注〗What is she?实际上是一种不太礼貌的说法，现在询问职业时多用What is his［her］profession?What is he［she］by profession?等。

2．比较下面几句话：

What’s your teacher like?——She’s very kind．你的老师是怎样的一个人?——她相当和蔼。

What does your teacher look like?——She is tall and pretty．你的老师是什么模样?——她个子高而且漂亮。

How’s your teacher?——She’s very well．你的老师身体怎么样?——她身体很好。第一句主要是询问性格、能力、成就或给人的印象，指物时是询问性质、质量、特征等，如：What is the tea like?(这茶怎么样?)What is the weather like today?(今天天气怎么样?)；第二句主要是询问人或物的外部特征；第三句主要是询问人的健康状况。

3．that和what都可以引导名词性从句，但两者的语法功能不同。

that引导名词性从句时只起连接作用，本身无意义，不在句中担任任何成分；而what是关系代词，不仅起连接的作用，还要充当主句或从句的一个句子成分，相当于the thing(s)that。例如：

He showed me what he had written．他把他所写的东西拿给我看了。

What she needs is a good rest．她需要的是好好地休息。

4．下面几句都可以说：

What is this place?

What is this place called?

What is the name of this place?

这几句都意为：“这是什么地方?”
