重足而立，侧目而视

两脚相叠站在那儿不敢挪动，斜着眼睛不敢正视。形容非常害怕的样子。西汉武帝时，廷尉张汤是有名的酷吏，他常常为一些小事对百姓施以重刑。主爵都尉汲黯反对这样做，他认为应当教化百姓，安国富民。有一次，汲黯和张汤发生了争辩，汲黯骂道：“人们都说刀笔吏不能做公卿，果然如此。你太残酷了，老百姓都被你吓得重足而立，侧目而视！”(见《史记·汲郑列传》)
