the story spreads (/passes) from person to person; travel from mouth to mouth and soon reach everyone’s ears

❶ 原指疾病的传染速度很快。宋·陶穀《清异录·丧葬义疾》：“一传十，十传百，展转无穷，故号义疾。”
❷ 后多指言语和消息的传递很快，越传越广。

〔其他〕 某事经人口耳相传，即迅速散布于大众。《宋史·选举志》：“老儒读文，场尾～，致使文多有雷同，合取卷，参验黜落。”
△ 多用于形容传播消息迅速、面广。
