甲骨文从两手持簸（其），上从子，象抛扔孩子状（可能死去的婴儿）。西周金文小篆至早期隶书上面从倒“子”。意义更明显。《说文》所载籀文、小篆和早期隶书都从倒“子”从(bān)，是有把儿的簸箕一类的器具，下从两手。《说文》所载战国文字省箕形作弃(上面就是倒“子”，如育、充例)，是简化了。现以为现范字。棄为异体字。见《异体字表》。弃是舍去，扔掉义。如：抛弃|遗弃|弃权|弃置不顾。
