英汉双解莎士比亚大词典︱GENERAL INTRODUCTION II. A CHRONOLOGICALLIST OF SHAKESPEARE’S PLAYS AND POEMS GENERAL INTRODUCTION II. A CHRONOLOGICALLIST OF SHAKESPEARE’S PLAYS AND POEMS 38 of Shakespeare’s plays have come down tous. But it is often difficult to date a given playprecisely. Scholars have had to work out thechronological order of his plays, based on threekinds of evidence, i. e. external evidence (re-cords of performance and publication, or refer-ences in contemporary works), internal evi-dence (allusions in the plays to contemporary e-vents, or quotations from contemporaryworks), and stylistic evidence (changes and de-velopments in Shakespeare’s use of blank verse,rhyme and prose). By a combination of thethree kinds of evidence, most plays can be datedapproximately and placed in the order of theirwriting, so that it is possible to traceShakespeare’s development as a dramatist. Thefollowing is a list of Shakespeare’s plays in theirapproximate chronological order with the datesof publication of his two narrative poems and sonnets: | Year | Play or Poem | | 1590 | Henry VI, Part II | | | Henry VI, Part III | | 1591 | Henry VI, Part I1592 Richard III | | | The Comedy of Errors | | 1593 | Titus Andronicus | | | The Taming of the Shrew | | | Venus and Adonis (published) | | 1594 | The Two Gentlemen of Verona | | | Love’s Labour’s LostRomeo and Juliet | | | The Rape of Lucrece (published) | | 1595 | Richard II | | | A Midsummer Night’s Dream | | 1596 | King John | | | The Merchant of Venice | | 1597 | Henry IV, Part I | | | Henry IV, Part II | | 1598 | Much Ado about Nothing | | | Henry V | | | The Merry Wives of Windsor | | 1599 | Julius Caesar | | | As You Like It | | 1600 | Twelfth Night1601 Hamlet | | | The Phoenix and the Turtle (pub-lished) | | 1602 | Troilus and Cressida | | 1603 | All's Well That Ends Well1604 Measure for Measure | | | Othello | | 1605 | King Lear | | | Macbeth | | 1606 | Antony and Cleopatra1607 Coriolanus | | | Timon of Athens | | 1608 | Pericles1609 Cymbeline | | | Sonnets,A Lover's Complaint(published) | | 1610 | The Winter's Tale | | 1611 | The Tempest1612 Henry VIII | | 1613 | The Two Noble Kinsmen |
