茄科是首先从原生质体再生植株的植物，这个植物家族广泛用于细胞遗传研究是不足为奇的。烟草、番茄、曼陀罗属、矮牵牛属和马铃薯都用于体细胞杂交，突变体分离和基因转移实验。能够再生植株的植物名录目前已包括许多非茄科作物(表3-8)，可期望几年后，细胞遗传实验将扩大到其他经济上重要作物。值得鼓舞人心是最近在苜蓿、珍珠谷、水稻和棉花上的成功。尽管有这些成就，豆科和禾谷类作物的培养仍然很困难。许多研究者直接尝试培养这些植物的原生质体仅得有限的成功。有指望的结果是禾谷类作物(玉米、小麦)和豆科(大豆、豌豆、菜、豇豆)的原生质体的持续细胞分裂或根器官发生所组成(表3-9)，其他重要作物也从培养原生质体产生了愈伤组织或根(表3-9)，说明原生质体的植株再生很快会扩大到更大范围的作物。
